Carolyn Bavister moved to Danby Castle with her family in March 2007 with a dream to turn it into a wedding venue. The Castle had been a farm for the last 400 years, and was unloved for 2 years prior to the Bavisters’ moving in. To change into a wedding venue required a lot of vision and hard work and plenty of understanding from Carolyn’s husband and children! This dream has been fully realised by winning Best Wedding Venue in The Bridal Magazine Supplier Awards for 2010.
Vintage Tea Party at Danby Castle
We have a range of menus from Pie n Mash feast to our Gourmet Meals, and are happy to tailor menus for couples as required – so yes we will cook your favourite meal for your wedding day! Sarah Muir owner of the Arches Cookery School provides all catering to Danby Castle Events. Sarah has provided hospitality services to some pretty high flying entertainers including – Elton John; Madness; The Prodigy; Whitney Houston; George Michael; Bob Dylan; Bon Jovi; Travis; Manic Street Preachers; Chemical Brothers; Oasis; Van Morrison; Lionel Richie and Robbie Williams to name a few. Sarah was also personal chef to Radiohead for six world tours and the Spice Girls and Melanie C world tours.
Carolyn’s plan is to host 40 weddings a year and is currently on target to achieve 30 for 2011.
Do you have a licence ?
Danby Castle has held a wedding licence since June 2008 and the renewal is currently going through. This time we have added the Wheelhouse as an additional room; it has 3 walls with one side opening into the courtyard, so is as close to an outdoor wedding as possible.
The Court Room
Do you have room for an outdoor marquee or garden party
We always provide a marquee within our venue hire costs, as whilst we have rooms upstairs we like to put a marquee or awning over the courtyard against the wheelhouse to provide a large covered area for our weddings. However, if the party is less than 20 and not having a live band or Disco then this would be unnecessary so a reduced venue hire fee would be offered.
Some Intimate Weddings can be last minute do you have any dates left for this year
We do have some dates left for this year 12th March, 16th and 30th April, 4th and 18th June and then some winter availability from 15th October. We can also consider an Intimate Wedding on a Wednesday or Thursday.
Venue Capacity
We welcome all sizes and styles of weddings, our smallest so far being 15 and our largest 250. We like to lay the Court Room out in a square for more intimate weddings and so all guests can see each other.

Venue Location and Directions
Danby Castle is situated in the North Yorkshire Moors on a moorland spur, overlooking the Esk valley. Take the Danby turning off the A171 Whitby to Guisborough road. Cross over the moors and enter the village, passing the Duke of Wellington pub on your left, then the village hall. Over a small 1 car bridge, then take the 2nd turning on the left ‘Brook Lane’. You will pass the Fox and Hounds pub on your left and after a further mile you will come across Danby Castle.
